Gender Bias and Abortion Legislation in the United States

Project

In collaboration with my colleagues Clara Bolster-Foucault, Ina Palii, and Mélissa Coissard, we compiled data on abortion state policies in the US and scored them in terms of how restrictive or protective they were for women and women's health. We then averaged gender prejudice levels for each state.

Findings

States with more restrictive policies tend to have higher levels of gender prejudice than states with no policies or states with protective policies.

We believe this correlation goes two ways: more prejudiced people oppose more protective policies and support more restrictive policies AND more restrictive policies impact how prejudiced people are.

Goal: Science Communication

We learned how to present complicated data-driven findings in an easily accessible format: a two minute presentation modelled after Dragon's Den
